Here's another possible venue for a StarRise get-together, and it not only will take place far enough in the future of this year that we can save toward it, but it's also centrally-located. www.fencon.org/

Only two or three hours from me! I could definitely do that!

I go to Fencon every year. It's local for me, but also the people are SO nice. It's a smaller con, but very well run. Great track if you're interested in filk and/or folk. Really good music. The Browncoats usually have a track of programing, too. I *highly* recommend this con.
Chantal, I also go to ApolloCon. That's in Houston, near Intercontinental Airport. Also a smaller, newish but well run con.

Local for you, Trini? Hmmmm. That puts three of us right near each other. (eg) Four if we drag Chantal up from Houston.
Heh heh heh....

Well, I'm not on call for it. Since being sensible was NOT on my list of New Year's resolutions, I can see two possibilities. One, I fly out by myself for a girl's weekend away. Two, I grab Charles, and we count this as our yearly weekend away together. Either way works for me.... Much as I'd love for you all to meet the girls, that is NOT in the cards for this year.

Anna, are you in Texas? (Well, I guess you could be in OK. That's also 2-3 hours from Dallas.) Who else is around here?
Hope, I would plotz if you came down here. For FenCon or anything.

By this time next month, I'll be in Shreveport, LA. And Susan is in Texas.

This sounds like the most likely option for a get together! While it is nowhere near me, a plane ride is pretty much a plane ride, if I can get a good price! (And I adore LMB. If either of my girls had been a boy, they would have been named Miles.)
Best of all...I can leave all details in the hands of those of you who actually live near there! (Any good Mexican in the area? New England is weak on Mexican food.)

Any good Mexican in the area? Oh, yes. Wonderful Tex-Mex.
LMB is a good reason to come. For a con only in their 6th year, FenCon has brought some cool guests. I had breakfast with Connie Willis one time. We talked about baseball. It was surreal and awesome.

Connie Willis? As in, To Say Nothing of the Dog ? That is just too cool. Have you read her Christmas collection?
I met Lois McMaster Bujold at Arisia some years back. There was a filk session just for songs about her characters, and she loved it. Sometimes authors can act as though their fans (and particularly filk) are beneath them; she looked like we were giving her the Nobel Peace Prize, only laughing. ;>
Hmm...that gives me months to write a filk about Sergeant Taura.... Or Ekaterin. Or both.

I'm trying to remember if I read her Christmas collection or not... I guess not. I've read sundry things. But especially To Say Nothing of the Dog.

I am still bitter than I was too sick to attend Westercon the year Connie Willis was the guest. She is just about my favorite author. I adore To Say Nothing of the Dog and Doomsday Book, and she has some very wonderful short stories as well. I was not too impressed with her Christmas stories, myself. They were merely ok, not brilliant like many of her others.

So, is it too early to ask if anyone could pick me up at the airport? ;> I'm just starting to look into flights.

My husband and I talked about this briefly. Whether we can attend or not, however, will depend entirely on finances closer to the time and if we can find someone to sit on the kids for the weekend. However Dallas is only about 3 hours away from us! But I'd love to go and meet folks! I haven't been to a con in years and he's NEVER been to one!
