So, what do folks think about a reunion held at Dragon*Con 2009? I don't particularly care about the convention, it's just a handy avenue that most of us are familiar with.

It's been the better part of a decade since I've been to a DragonCon, and it might be fun to go back. Does it necessarily have to be something that big and noisy, with all those interesting distractions, though? One of the best Weyr assemblies I ever went to was a Sable Weyr one, at Continuity in Birmingham, AL. Continuity was a small-sized local con, much like Coastcon or Mobicon started out as. Maybe do a day or two at DC, then stay after a day or so like we used to do? Or maybe find a smaller venue? Or what about renting a beach condo or something similar? Or we could all go to Uncle Bob's...

Not I, I'm afraid. We already ditched the kid with my parents for one long weekend and she's not old enough to bring with. Sigh!

Well, if we do this, it'll be September '09, which gives you plenty of time to work on the parents.

Grandparents objecting to having the kid for a weekend? That's possible? Is the world ending?

I am all for DragonCon because I want to attend the forensics panel again--if they still have it. And the Dealers' Room is awesome there. (g)
That said, I wouldn't mind getting together at a smaller con or at no con at all--just us reserving a couple of hotel suites or a guest house and hanging out. (and writing!!!)
I have a laptop now, so I can be dangerous. (EWG)
If we don't do this at DragonCon, Houston is centrally located, though Birmingham is probably cheaper..
Having a year to save up for it would be a definite help.

hey, I'm all for us gathering in Vegas - it's cheap to fly to and hotel rooms are cheap, too. Even the food is. :-) But I know there are some folks who wouldn't be able to make it, and I really, really want to see them.

Vegas is pretty much out for me; I'm basically limited to the Southeast for the foreseeable future.
Chantal, you and I were once upon a time looking at a get-together in Houston. Are there any sorts of cons or other gatherings there we could build a SR Reunion around?

Well, I'm going to D*C this year and will probably attend in 2009 as well, so I'm all for it. However, Dave raises a valid point... D*C is horribly big and noisy, and expensive as well. My first big Pern get-together was at ConClave in Michigan, back in... oh, '91 it must've been. I'm not sure that I even went to any of the con stuff then, except maybe the dealers' room. We spent most of the weekend just hanging out in our hotel rooms and plotting deviously. That brings up another possibility: a gathering without a con. If we can find a location that either drivable or with affordable airfare for as many of us as possible, we may be able to get a block of rooms at a group rate, and perhaps even a conference or other meeting room of some kind. It's like Anna said in the OP; we don't particularly need the convention itself. Hell, that may just distract from our Pern plotting.

I'm cool with a gathering separate from a convention. I'm still opting for Atlanta, though - it would probably be as much to fly in to Hartfield as it would any other airport! I just need plenty of advance notice so I can finagle the finances and hash out the homework schedule.

Dave--We have RevelCon in March each year--It's pretty much a slash-oriented zine convention with an art show and dealers' room. I could talk to one of the organizers about a Pern room, or we could just hang out in our hotel rooms.
We used to do ConTex, and there's also Aggiecon in Bryan/College Station. I'll see when those are next scheduled. I also wouldn't mind a gathering without a convention. No distractions, that way.

As much as I'd like to see you all after so long, travel is very difficult for me anymore. A convention isn't necessarily needed for a get together. Just a mutual location and some rooms. A year to plan seems like a long time but the time goes by very quickly.

A year? I like to plan things at least 5 years in advance! My girls are 3 and 9, so starting to be civilized; air fare would be the biggest reason not to bring them. I like the idea of finding the place with cheapest airfare for the largest number of people, and going there...wherever there is. Fort 9 does a campout every year, which is great (and where I originally met my husband)...but honestly, my idea of camping now is more "Marriot" and less "cots". I'll be going back to Fort Fest in a year or two, though, when Leah is old enough to Impress. The papermache eggs are way cool, and she would be so impressed...pun accidental!

Since AggieCon is actually in Texas, I couldn't possibly object. (g)
Dave--Completely off-topic, about your icon...
Shouldn't it be 'Republicans for McGonagall?'
Though, the way some regard the Republican party, it might as well be Voldemort. (g)
