Final Draft
Character name: K’tern
Gender: Male
Occupation/rank: Senior Journeyman DragonHealer
Birth date: 02.06.17
Birthplace: Dawn Hold
Hair: A pleasant light brown crop of hair covers K’tern’s head. At current it is kept just long enough to provide substance, none of that shaved head appearance for him.
Eyes: Light green eyes gaze out upon the world, taking in every detail of his surroundings. Eyes that could sparkle with laughter, but more often frown, or squint in concentration.
Build (height/weight): There’s no getting around it, K’tern is very average. Almost exactly in the middle of the Pernese size range, he is definitely more muscular than the average Pernese. Handling wounded dragons is no easy task, and the muscles show that.
General appearance: Even though he is approaching 32 Turns, K’tern still has that boyish look from his teenage years. Even the freckles remain, dotting his cheeks at random when the warm weather appears for the Turn. Thin lips round out his face, perfect company for serious frown his eyes make so often. This is not a person to dress casually. It’s either the Dragon Healer attire or a formal tunic and trousers, sharply creased. The only time he will ever seem casual in dress is when he washes his brown, and even then one could note the excellent condition of his work clothes.
Sexual orientation: Heterosexual
Firelizards: None
Personality: “Apprentice, stop gawking and get back to work. Now.” Taciturn describes K’tern in a word. Working as a DragonHealer nearly full time he has little patience for stupid pranks and idiocy. Work he will, devoting the majority of his time in the Dragon Infirmary, making sure everything and everyone is fine. If the patients are all settled he’ll do Hidework. If that’s done he’ll inventory supplies, and so on. The Infirmary is his life’s work, and he takes care of it accordingly. Indeed it will take a great deal of persuasion by both his dragon and several other people to stop working before the 12th Candlemark of the night. Rumor has it that he keeps a cot in his office for those nights when he’s too busy to return to his Weyr.
However, there is a different side to this man, brought out by the younger generation of WeyrFolk. K’tern has a soft spot for the Weyr’s young people, teenagers and so on. Anytime one encounters him, they will always receive a kind word and a smile. He even keeps a jar of sweets in his office for those Weyrlings whose dragons are residing in the Infirmary. The negative side of this is that if he loses a young dragon, he will be devastated. The death will upset him for days, and work becomes his only Sanctuary to keep the grief away. Work finished and nothing else to do, tears will come freely and in no small amount.
The only other thing that can bring K’tern out of his taciturn standard besides several shots of heavy liquor is his dragon, Graerth. Ever since Impression the two have conquered nigh impossible tasks together. Graerth was blinded in one eye at birth, and the battle to fly and try *Betweening* was one that bonded the two almost as much as Impression itself. Graerth is the one soul that K’tern trusts unconditionally, and when not pulling nights in the Infirmary can be found nestled up with his brown, deep within the bond of rider and dragon.
The only other odd trait of K’tern is that he has an unbound fascination with gardening, based off the occasional Restday when he was forced to do something other than reside in the Infirmary. He maintains his own little patch of healing herbs and the occasional Redfruit bush. Oh, and if you tell his Apprentices that he *will* get you.
General history: An average childhood was K’tern’s. Born Katern of Dawn Hold, (Beholden to Horizon Hold) he lived an blissfully unaware childhood, getting into mischief but never so much that he discovered where things truly lay at the Hold A typical Search story happened when he was 14 Turns, and soon enough he was a Candidate at StarRise Weyr, trying to stay out of enough trouble to be allowed to Stand. The Happy-go-lucky boy expressed an interest in Healing while a Candidate, and eventually became an Apprentice while awaiting a clutch.
Finally, at 16 Turns, Brown Graerth hatched in the midst of what would be known as a competitive Hatching. It seemed that each and every dragonet was determined to get to their chosen first, and in the chaos a blue reared back and accidentally delivered an incredible clawing to Graerth’s face. The slashing claws completely blinded Graerth in one eye, along with scarring the whole right side of his face. Four words cut through K’tern’s mind in that moment. Katern! Where are you?! The plea rang to K’tern’s soul and he sprinted for the brown while yelling at the top of his lungs for a DragonHealer.
Pain was in his mind and being, and the next few minutes were very touch and go. However the DragonHealers prevailed, and both survived the rest of the day in the Infirmary. Blinded completely in one eye, K’tern knew that there was no way he’d ever be in a fighting wing. Graerth had extremely limited depth perception, a dangerous thing. He would always need someone to guide him, on the ground, and in the air. Flying was another battle throughout the modified Weyrlinghood, but the two made it work. K’tern became Graerth’s eyes. After all, he would comment dryly, three eyes are better than one. This same method worked for *Betweening* though it again took longer for the pair to master it safely.
It was during Weyrlinghood that the carefree innocence of K’tern faded away. He realized it was an adult world, and if one wanted to survive they needed to work and work hard. Part of this was reinforced by the wonderful DragonHealing staff that worked with them almost every day. Knowing he was grounded from the Fighting Wings, K’tern put forth the decision to repay the debt he owed the DragonHealers and became one himself.
He started off as all did, from the very bottom, but he had an advantage. Where most had to learn from Hides alone, he had a dragon, and found out very quickly that it made communicating with the injured dragons much easier. At 25 Turns he gained his Journeyman knots, and five Turns later, got the second knot, symbolizing a Senior Journeyman. Content with his work, and what he’s made of his life, he resides at StarRise Weyr, doing what he does best, with the one he loves best.

(Physical Description): The scars that mar Graerth’s head catch many people’s gaze immediately. The red lines run down the right side of his face, two stopping short, just above his eye, the other running right through it. The right eyelid remains closed, the damage to great to do any repair too. The scar continues down a few more inches after the eye, making a very vicious image for those who have never seen Graerth before.
Once people get past the scar, they noticed the coloration of his hide. From a glance it looks like several Weyrbrats stole several different variations of brown and splattered it across the brown. Indeed Chocolate brown fads to tan and then to a pleasant light brown again. This, almost camouflage like coloration gets quite a few looks from people visiting the Weyr.
Graerth is a medium sized brown. He is wiry and has only a slight bit of muscle, never being required to fly Threadfall or drill with the wings. He gets what little exercise he can from his midday flights with K’tern, and quite a bit of walking in general.
(Personality): Mine, not yours, mine. Graerth is possessive, by nature more than anything else. Since his injury at birth, he relied on K’tern to help get him where he needed to be, and feels overly unsettled when very far away from him for long periods. As a Weyrling, Graerth, challenged by the lack of vision in one eye soon picked up little techniques that helped him determine depth. With a somewhat improved way of seeing, K’tern felt more confident that when on the ground he could make his way about without much mishap. Flying was a whole other matter though. It took both of them a long two Turn’s practice to get to the point where they could take to the sky. Any way around it the two closer than most Weyrlings were, K’tern spending every free moment with his brown, and not with fellow Weyrlings. Along with this near constant companionship, Graerth insisted K’tern sleep with him nearly every night almost as a security blanket, and this tradition continues to this very day.
However the possessiveness works both ways. As a DragonHealer’s dragon, he has learned over the years how to calm an injured dragon, to make them feel safe and at ease. He devotes as much effort to his patients as does K’tern, and is not opposed to nuzzling anyone who needs reassurance that everything is healing correctly. This possessiveness again becomes a bad thing, as sick dragons finally heal and return to active duty. Graerth becomes so attached to his patients that he loses something when they leave, as he never has experienced the bond that dragons in the fighting wings do. Likewise, Chasing becomes an issue, as the problem of Depth perception reappears. For that reason Graerth is always very conservative in chasing, keeping as much of an even head as is possible during the Flight Lust. So far, nothing bad has happened, but he’s won very few flights.
This disappointment can turn into bitterness and requires much soothing from K’tern or another dragon who is feeling sympathetic. When not helping K’tern in the Infirmary, he perches on his ledge, talking and offering a quiet, listening audience to any dragon who might want to talk. Though not the life he would choose, Graerth always grudgingly admits it is a life.
