So much for just reading. I can't help it. This is an NPC, and an exercise in figuring out what someone would do if he couldn't fly, but couldn't completely retire.
Character name: G’set
Gender: Male
Age: 51 in turn 34
Occupation/rank: Assistant Weyrling Trainer / tanner
Birthdate: 183.09.02
Birthplace: High Reaches Weyr
Hair: Light brown hair going grey. He wears it a little longer now that it’s receding a bit. Still off the collar, though.
Eyes: Dark.
Build (height/weight): Tall and substantial. Broad shoulders, strong arms. Wearing a little more weight around the middle lately, but still in reasonable shape.
General appearance: He has a long, stalwart face, wears his veteran years on it. He can look scary and intense, especially to candidates and weyrlings, which is intentional. His dress is utilitarian, practical. Often described as ‘grim’ or ‘dour,’ his eyes give away a dry sense of humor.
Sexual orientation: Straight-- “If I remember back that far.”
Firelizards: Brown “Grub,” the laziest firelizard on Pern. A gift from the Weyrhealer at Fort.
Personality: G’set takes little nonsense from anyone. He and Raedyth were dependable workhorses of High Reaches Weyr until the brown dragon was nearly-blinded in Fall, about 20 Turns ago. That’s still G’set--dependable and serious minded. (An NCO type, through and through.)
He’s often described as cranky, grim, implacable… a humorless taskmaster to weyrlings, as he teaches them to make and maintain their riding straps. And he can be. He does have a sense of humor; it is understated and very dry, and turns bitter when he’s feeling his years and his losses.
He is driven in his duties as a craftsman and a teacher, because in every rider he sees someone who will be risking his or her life where he and Raedyth cannot go. So he is dead set to send them up as prepared as possible, equipment wise. (G’set has taken his turns as weyrlingmaster, but does better as an adjunct instructor within his area of expertise. He gets too invested, otherwise, though this would surprise people.)
G’set is amiable with his peers--meaning riders who have been around awhile. His expertise (see history) has taken him to every Weyr, and he’s old enough to be well connected.
General history: Weyrbred, G’set impressed at 12, during the Interval. About ten years into the Pass, Raedyth was injured in threadfall, leaving him with limited sight. The pair stood as watchrider for a while, a token position that wounded their pride--they could announce arrivals and carry messages only during the day. To keep himself useful to the weyr, G’set developed skill (master level, though he doesn’t officially hold that rank) for designing riding straps, getting the best fit for dragon sizes and strengths. He earned a name for himself when he modified Goldrider (later Weyrwoman) Lysera’s harness to accommodate her old pelvic injuries, and since then has been the go to guy when riders or dragons have special requirements in their rig.
Day to day, he teaches weyrlings how to make their first straps, and oversees a small crew to keep the dragons’ rigging in good repair. (Though each rider is responsible for their own harness, that’s a lot of leather per dragon. Contemporary example: A soldier maintains his weapon, but goes to the armory for anything beyond the basics.) G’set still travels to other weyrs for consultations, but has reached a point where he likes to live somewhere warm. He’s developing arthritis, but it hasn’t slowed him down much.
He was weyrmated once, and lost her to ‘Fall. He hasn’t made that kind of commitment again. It’s hard enough to lose friends. He has a daughter, a brownrider at Fort Weyr, the result of the last mating flight in which Raedyth participated. He’s (secretly) very proud of her, and if the Pernese believed in Fate, he would say it was fitting that he produced his own replacement.
Relations:
Weyrmate (deceased)
Daughter, Y’sa, early 20’s, a brownrider presently at Fort Weyr
Timeline: (Yes, it's sketchy, but I like to have flexibility for retcon as opportunities arise. )
183.09.02 -- Born at High Reaches Weyr
195.xx.xx -- Impressed brown Raedyth
12.xx.xx -- Raedyth injured in ‘Fall
33.05.12-- Transfers to StarRise Hold
Riders
Dragon name/color: Raydyth/brown
Dragon's hatching date: 195ish
Sire/Dam: unknown
Wing: unassigned
Dragon:
Raedyth is cranky. If he were human, he would spend a lot of time telling weyrlings and dragonets to get off his lawn, and talking about the old days. He’s defensive about his limitations, and once in a while breaks G’set’s heart by wondering if it wouldn’t have been better if he’d just been killed. But now, mostly he’s just a cranky old guy. If the weyrlings talk about him behind his back, he kind of deserves it.
Raedyth can distinguish light and dark patterns, which allows him to hunt and to go between as long as there is a good contrasting silhouette (like star stones) to go off of. He cannot go between except in broad daylight, and as he cannot distinguish Thread against the background of the sky, he cannot fly with a fighting wing. In daytime ‘falls, he flies with the youngest weyrlings, as they ferry firestone. (No wonder he’s cranky.)
Available for use: Of course. I'd love to know what you're up to, but it's not required.
