Location Information
Located on the Horizon Peninsula, north of the StarRise Island chain.
Badge Design
Bottom half is sapphire blue, with the half sphere of a rising golden yellow sun beginning at the end of the deep blue. The upper half, behind the yellow half globe, is light sky blue.
Land Type
Cliffs, rugged hills, beachland, some forests and open grasslands inland.
Distinctive Landmarks
A high cliff surrounds the Horizon Hold major, protecting it on three sides from the sea. Alydar Falls, named for the hold's founder, also plummets over the cliffs here to join the sea.
Main crop/Production/Export
Horizon exports natural resources such as fish, wood, grains, vegetables and spices. The various mines produce a variety of minerals sought across Pern. Horizon is known for breeding quality racing runners, and also exports draft runnerbeasts, herdbeasts and wherries. They also have a growing shipping industry that offers transport of goods for independent customers, and naval protection for the seafaring merchants.
Agriculture
Horizon harvests mainly grain, especially for the feeding of livestock. Other harvests of food and spices are less successful.
People
The people of Horizon territory vary as much as the climate and terrain. The coastal folk tend to be salty, weathered seafarers, while the inlanders are generally specialized toward their skills, whether it be timber harvesting, mining or farming. Overall, the people tend to be hard working and hard playing, and perhaps more hard edged, as their homeland is often more treacherous than the Northern Continent of Pern.
Customs
The people of Horizon, in general, like sailing, exploring, and participating in Horizon's lavish festivals when they can. Many holders own runnerbeasts, particularly racing animals, as Lord Kander has tried to make them available to folk who normally could never afford such traditionally elitist expenditures.
Special Holidays
Horizon Hold's Founding Day is on the first day of the 8th month. Also, the annual Horizon Hold Gather, the biggest gather on the peninsula of the turn, is held each summer.
Overall View
Morale is typically high, with Lord Kander's attempt to give a high standard of living to his holderfolk, and yet the upper parts of the peninsula are known for unspoiled natural beauty, in contrast to the modern hold improvements in the heavily civilized regions. The weather a contrast, too; very warm in summer, and very cold in the middle of winter.
Amusements
Runner racing is Horizon Hold's biggest project, dominating their summer gathers. They also have sailing and swimming contests when the coastal weather is favorable.
Architecture
Most of Horizon Hold itself is built in the shadow of the surrounding cliffs, with many interconnected buildings of various shapes and sizes. Also the cliffs themselves are hollowed out in places for dwellings and storage.
Art
Runnerbeasts and sailing ships are classic subjects for art in Horizon territory, immortalized in traditional style, realistic paintings and wooden sculpture.
Dress
Lord Kander's fancy is toward loose, comfortable clothing in hold colors, especially a rich blue cloak. The common folk also favor loose clothing, with the hold colors of blues and yellow gol¬ds, and whites. Dark vests over lighter undertunics are popular. Long pullover tunics are more popular than dresses with women of Horizon, with the exception of gathers and such.
Gathers
Horizon hosts gathers all turn long, but particularly in the summer months during its racing season. Horizon throws a gather on it's Founding Day, plus it's racing oriented Horizon Hold Gather day every summer. In the 16th Turn, Horizon held the inaugural Runner Racing Championships of Pern, a three day event to official¬ly determine the best racers on Pern. The event is now rotated between Horizon and several holds on the Northern and Southern Continents, taking place late each turn in the 10th, 11th or 12th months.
Food
Seafood is one of the staples of Horizon Hold, being available, nutritious and pleasing in its varieties. Herdbeast jerky is a popular supplement, especially inland.
History
Horizon was founded by a seafarer named Alydar, whose family spread out to settle the surrounding islands and started the population of the region. Kander's father, Lord Mand, first began the racing runner breeding that Kander now endeavors to perfect.
Legends
The northernmost regions of the peninsula have a bad reputation as being very dangerous, and ill luck for those who explore, due mostly to the death of one of the original settlers to explore there.
