aka What Most People On Pern Do For a Living
On Pern, the majority of the population are those people rarely seen in McCaffrey's books. She focuses on dragonriders, crafters, and high ranking holders.
They are, in all truth, a very very very small portion of the population. Most folk who keep the world going are the ones she never writes about.
So what jobs do they do, and that your character can do to? Well, here's a list, based off of the Medieval Jobs page at www.castles-of-britain.com/castle32.htm.
Baliff (gives assignments and makes sure they're completed)
Barber
Candlemakers
Carpenters
Caskmakers
Cooks: bakers, poulterers, butchers, brewers (makes beers and ales), millers, fruiterers, slaughterers, servers, scullions, butler (keeps the wine cellar),
Farmers
Fishermen
Guards
Harpers: minstrels, teachers (these are separate from the crafted Harpers)
Hayward: tends to the greenery in and around Hold/Weyr
Healers: herb gardeners, nurses (these are separate from the crafted Healers)
Hunters
Laundresses
Maintenance: painters, carpenters, plasterers, brickmakers, glaziers, brick & tile makers, roadmenders
Marshal: oversees the transportation of goods.

Smith (separate from the crafted Smiths)
Soapmakers
Stablemen: grooms, stock handlers, herders, farriers, carters, swineherds, falconer

Tanners: shoemaker (separate from the crafted Tanners)

And there are many, many more jobs to be had, as well. But this gives you an idea.
