I am regularly called Z. I am a writer, artists, and role player. My mom bought an audio tape for the book Dragon's Blood. I have never read, or heard the original Dragon riders of Pern. So for the past week i have dreamed of pern, of fire lizards, of watch wyers, and of dragons. Now i am on the hunt for the other books on tape, or cd, even mp3. I have notes and paragraphs from riding in the suv listening to the story and letting my imagination sore. I would love to participate, but first i must find more of pern.
Right now pern has become my new drug. i feel so sheepish since here i am joining before i have even listened to the beginning. That and a few of my mom's explanations of what things look like...mostly watch wyers... if anyone has a few ideas or drawn examples i would love that...
I cannot wait for my next pern adventure.

Welcome Z! Your library is a great place to start looking for the books or books on tape. The original trilogy is _DragonFlight_, _DragonQuest_, and _The White Dragon_. Our club takes place in a slightly alternate timeline; we diverged from Anne McCaffrey's Pern at the end of the White Dragon, so pretty much you can accept that trilogy as our past; we take place about 200 years (turns) later, and the world has changed a little. Very little technology, but somewhat better equality for women, particularly in the Crafts and the Weyrs. Our club is rated PG-13, and we ask that stories and art submitted stick to that guideline. On the flip side of that, we do ask members under 18 to have parental approval; that's honor system, since we can't actually verify age! This is an awesome time to join, because our third zine will be out in just under a month! Links to the two previous zines are on the Boards...I know Anna knows where they are.... Speaking of Anna--she's in charge of Art, and since you mentioned the "A" word in your post, expect to be encouraged to submit art--including, if you feel like it, for this issue. There is some art on this site, and lots more on line to give you a feel for what things look like. _The Dragonlover's Guide to Pern_ is also generously illustrated, and your library may be able to get in on inter-library loan. I know what you mean about the Pern addiction. Pern was my 4th literary and media addiction (after Lord of The Rings, StarWars, and Watership Down), and the first where I actually wrote my own stories. And then, years later, I discovered Pern fandom. How amazing! Other people with the same addiction! Have fun, and ask questions; we're a friendly bunch.

Aaaanywho, I'm also the residential theater crazy waiting for audtions to come, and filling my head with dragons in the meantime! Welcome to the madness!

Z.--Welcome to StarRise! As Hope said, the best place to find the older Pern books is at your library. We tend to use the original trilogy and the Harperhall trilogy--Dragonsong, Dragonsinger, and Dragondrums, as well.
Writing Pern is wonderful fun, in part because you're encouraged to create your own characters and use them in McCaffrey's setting, rather than using McCaffrey's characters. It allows you to do something original and different. This is how I write for Harry Potter fan fiction, too; I create my own characters for it, instead of using Rowling's.
It's great to have you with us!
