Karayan, rider of gold Armagnath
Igen Weyr Persona Sheet
Persona Information
Name: Karayan
Position: Weyrwoman 2nd, Igen Weyr (Sr. Wingsecond, Queens Wing)
Gender: Female
Age/Birthdate: 07.07.23 (29 in Turn 36)
Birthplace: Igen Hold
Family/Significant Others:
Parents: Shahan, father, architect (deceased); Komiyo, mother, sculptor (deceased)
Siblings: Davil, brother, Stonemason (deceased); Rosawen, Davil’s wife (deceased)
Rulian, brother, 43 (Harper)
Kember, brother (deceased)
Significant Others: V’merin, rider of brown Tilanth; Treshawn, rider of gold Tosayth, friend; Orana, rider of green Sheelanth, friend; considers Weyrwoman Zahlenka and Weyrwoman Lalytha mentors.
Physical Description:
Karayan is 5’8 and slim, in excellent physical condition. She keeps her hair, which is sable-brown and wavy, just below her shoulders. Her face is oval-shaped with high cheekbones, straight nose, and cupid’s-bow mouth; her skin is tanned golden, but her eyes are blue-gray with curved brows and thick lashes. (Media ref: Isabella Adjani).
A trained Combatant of junior journeyman rank, Karayan is right-handed and wears her Ramellan dagger in a sheath on her belt. She often wears a short tunic over trousers with boots, or, sometimes, a long tunic over trousers with boots or sandals. On occasion, Karayan will wear a more feminine ensemble (skirts and tunics or gowns). She loves jewelry and has been given several fine pieces. Karayan loves red in almost all shades; her favorite colors are varied—dark green, saffron, deep blue, indigo, amethyst, coral, white and cream. She would rather die than wear black, grey, beige or brown.
Background and Timeline:
Karayan’s parents were crafters; her mother Komiyo was in the mason craft as a sculptor, and her father Shahan was a builder. Komiyo fell ill with a pulmonary infection and died when Karayan was just over a turn old. Soon after, Shahan died in a fall suffered when he got caught at a site in a heavy rainstorm. Karayan’s oldest brother Davil took her into his cot, despite his wife Rosawen’s objections; Rosawen resented having to care for Karayan when other relatives could have taken on the task. She took it out on Karayan, who did her best to escape her sister-by-marriage whenever possible.
Karayan took an interest in swordplay by watching the guards practice, and gained a teacher named Annit, a former Combatant. Annit trained Karayan and sponsored her to the Combatant Hall in the Southern Continent. She did very well, earning her journeyman rank at the age of 18, and went home for a quick visit before returning to take her first commission.
Unfortunately, Karayan’s brother Davil considered her education at an end, and sought to marry her off. Wanting her training to continue—and disgusted by the man her brother had become—Karayan thought she’d solve the problem by seducing (or being thought to have seduced) a dragonrider who came to the Hold on Search. When the rider rejected her, Karayan had to bargain with him: she’d come to Igen Weyr, stand for Impression, and leave if she didn’t succeed. In resignation, Karayan took a change of clothing and stood at the next Hatching. To her immense shock, she Impressed gold Armagnath.
Karayan settled in quietly at the Weyr, too busy with her studies and duties to get into trouble; the only thing that caused much fuss was her growing relationship with a clutchmate named V’merin, a brownrider. Too many bronzeriders felt he was an obstacle to their making the new goldrider’s acquaintance. As Igen had strict rules regarding the sexual conduct of weyrlings before their dragons reached maturity, Karayan remained chaste and had little trouble from the bronzeriders themselves.
In turn 26, Karayan earned a punitive transfer after repeating an unwise remark made by the Fort Weyrwoman, Natali, rider of gold Maeth. A comment made at a holder’s expense, and not meant to be repeated, made the round of a Gather crowd. The infuriated Holder demanded an apology from Natali; Karayan was forced to own up to her part in the indiscretion, along with adding that she was “misheard” in order to spare the Weyr embarrassment. She also had to apologize to the angry crafters who’d overheard her and were incensed to have their own integrity called into question. Finally, the Igen Weyrleaders decided Karayan needed to be relocated for her peace and theirs; when a request from Sable Weyr came for any free goldriders, Lalytha and T’lar sent Karayan onward.
Karayan didn’t make the trip alone; V’merin decided he needed to accompany her “for sanity’s sake”—hers. Karayan was immensely grateful for the support, as her feelings for V’merin had deepened. At Sable, however, she found herself frustrated as V’merin refused to be more to her than a friend. Before Armagnath had her maiden flight in turn 27, Karayan already had a short list of bedmates, which included two bronzeriders, a brownrider, an Outrider from Wind Spires Hold, and a guard at Nahsan Hold. She deliberately sought a way to keep V’merin at arm’s length, telling herself it was better to keep him as a friend than ruin the relationship by attempting (and failing) to seduce him.
At Sable, Karayan mastered Weyr politics, but also got sucked into a group of riders who called themselves the Commandos; they were dedicated to wiping out the jermander & glabra trade in Sable territory, but took such covert steps as to subvert Weyr and Hold authority. Karayan stumbled onto the group by accident, when a young greenrider she’d befriended was horrifically murdered by smugglers; she helped the Commandos in their search for the murderers, but began to have second thoughts when she discovered the group ran so counter to everything the Weyr stood for. In turn 28, she went to Weyrwoman Zahlenka and revealed what she knew. The consequences were immediate: the Commandos’ leaders were flogged, the majority of the riders were grounded, and Karayan herself was transferred back to Igen for her own safety after an attempt was made, unsuccessfully, on her life.
Back at Igen, she discovered her brother Davil had been charged with murdering his wife Rosawen. The incident brought an ugly end to her relationship with her brother, and it also drove Karayan to question the direction of her own life. She applied herself to her duties, becoming Weyrwoman 2nd to Lalytha, and worked on proving to V'merin that her feelings for him were sincere. Although she has a daughter sired by the winner of one of Armagnath's past flights, Karayan disliked the man to the point of insisting he disavow paternity, and named her child Karmerin. Since then, she and V'merin--who has stepped into the role of Karmie's father--have raised her as much as their various responsibilities will allow.

33.??.?? - Daughter Karmerin (Karmie) born.
Personality:
Karayan is a calm young woman, with a wry sense of humor and a warm way with strangers. She is a born diplomat, perceptive and devious; she can spin pretty tales to save someone’s feelings, then turn around and deliver the truth with such bluntness as to take the recipient’s breath away. It’s unfortunate that, when it comes to people in authority, Karayan’s truth-telling instincts overwhelm her diplomatic nature.
After being a goldrider for nine turns, Karayan understands the effect she has on some men, and knows how to deal with the effect they have on her. She gained a reputation at Sable as a “love ‘em and leave ‘em” type; her lovers were lucky to spend a sevenday with her before she ended the association. Karayan was honest with her partners; she enjoyed sex for its own sake, and had a potential weyrmate in mind who wasn’t any of them. At Igen, she dropped her habit of taking frequent bedmates; she's gained in women friends because not only has she made no attempt to poach their mates, Karayan has offered a shoulder to cry on, and advice on which man to approach or flee.
Karayan is open and friendly with women, a little flirtatious with men, and straightforward with all. V'merin is the most important person on Pern to her; her daughter Karmie runs a hair-close second, and Karayan is giddily proud of her little girl. (The foster parents are already complaining that the Weyrwoman Second steals Karmie off for too many events.) She shows a cool contempt for those easily led, ill-mannered, or lazy; people who presume to know how she feels or what she thinks are treated to a little rudeness in return. Nor will she put up with rough handling or abuse. There are riders at Sable who learned the hard way that this was one woman who wasn’t amenable to non-consensual roughness, and that a slap would be met with a right hook in return. After the death of her sister-in-law, Karayan has even less sympathy for abusive men, and has begun to speak up when she witnesses such a situation.
Karayan hates to lose, and prefers to run her competition into the ground rather than give up. She will, however, concede if she feels it’s in her best interests to do so (i.e., if doing it will make her opponent look bad or make her look better). When she decides she wants something, she goes after it, and usually gets it through sheer determination.
A voracious learner, Karayan doesn’t shirk responsibility; she does, however, appreciate the finer things in life—good clothes, good food, dancing, music, and sleeping late. (She’s not a morning person!) She enjoys felines, but is deeply annoyed by firelizards—Kember is an exception, and even he gets on her nerves. Karayan is frightened of canines and tries to avoid them. She plays gitar very well, and has driven neighbors mad by playing her favorite tunes over and over.
Pets: A young blue firelizard named Kember, a Turnover gift from Weyrwoman Zahlenka of Sable.
Dragon: Armagnath
Color/Appearance: Dark amber-gold; of medium build
Age: 8 turns
Where/When Impressed: Igen Weyr, 24.12.14
Skills/Abilities: A fine flyer, Armagnath has speed and endurance. She likes especially to give interested bronzes a run for their marks.
Personality: Quick and lively, Armagnath has a strong mischievous streak. She can be bossy and obnoxious, but is curious about everything and doesn’t hold grudges. Her closest attachment, aside from Karayan, is to Tilanth, her clutchmate; the brown is the only dragon whose company she truly enjoys.
