Persona Information
Name: Lushin
Position: Weyr Dragonhealer (Master rank)
Gender: Male
Age/Birthdate: I 190.12.27 (age 43)
Birthplace: Split Rock Hold, Eastern Islands
Family/Significant Others: Family is deceased
Physical Description: Lushin stands 6’4, and is broad-shouldered but thin in build. Thanks to his excellent condition, he looks sinewy rather than gaunt. His depression has lifted to the point where he remembers to eat regularly. His black hair, flecked with gray at the temples, is cropped short on his skull; his eyes are dark gray with heavy brows, and give him a shadowed, haunted look. A handsome man, fine-featured with good bone structure, Lushin’s looks are marred by Threadscore on the left side of his face, which drag down his eyelid and mouth in a permanent sneer. There are disfiguring, but not disabling, scars on the undersides of both forearms, running halfway to his elbows, and a ligature mark is visible across his neck. At best, Lushin’s appearance can be intimidating; at worst, frightening. (Media ref: George Clooney)
Lushin’s clothing is simple—trousers, sweaters, tunics and shirts—and kept neat and mended. He wears no jewelry and carries no weapon for his own peace of mind.
Background and Timeline:
Lushin was born to Cambrin, a Weaver, and his wife Aline. Aline, never well physically, fared poorly while carrying Lushin, and the Healers advised Cambrin and Aline to take precautions. Lushin was therefore pampered and showered with affection by both parents. But then Aline became pregnant again, much to her husband’s anger and dismay. The pair argued bitterly until Aline finally gave birth two months prematurely. She bore a healthy, strapping boy; she also died from blood loss. Cambrin was a changed man from that day; he withdrew from both sons and took no interest in Merral, Lushin’s little brother.
Lushin was Searched at 14 for StarRise, and Impressed bronze Altath. As the young bronze had a weak left wing from a bad weyrling accident, L’shin took an interest in dragonhealing; it became a second craft for him, one he practiced with a real feel for the work and the dragons. Then Altath died from a severe ‘scoring in Turn 18. L’shin attempted suicide twice. The first attempt, by hanging, damaged his throat and left his speaking voice a harsh rasp, a caricature of the fine baritone he once had. Lushin mangled his arms so badly in the second attempt that he wears long sleeves and refuses to bare his arms no matter what the weather’s like.
During his convalescence, Lushin found that the dragons would, on occasion, still speak to him. The pain was so great that he left StarRise, hoping to find the courage to kill himself. He went to the Beasthealer Hall in Keroon, and found he was still able to practice dragonhealing—and more, bear the agony of hearing dragons without ever again sharing his mind with the one he lost. Lushin’s applied knowledge and experience earned him a second journeyman’s knot. He earned his Master’s rank in Turn 25. After intense counseling with a Mindhealer, he decided to return to StarRise Weyr. To his relief, there was a position open at the Weyr, and he accepted it gratefully.
His tenure at StarRise was unpleasant but educational. Many riders recalled Lushin from happier days, and were shocked and dismayed at the great change in his personality. For his part, Lushin was disgusted with many riders’ carelessness, haunted by constant reminders of his past, and frightened by the challenge of living at a Weyr once more. The work steadied his mind, and a young journeyman named Rillen gave him emotional strength, providing him with someone he could mentor and goad at the same time. Unfortunately, the presence of another journeyman, a young woman named Coventina, nearly undid Lushin; she was romantically interested in him, which awakened feelings he found uncomfortable and a little unwelcome.
The disaster of Turn 28—the deaths of Yalayth and Vinalli, as well as the loss of many dragons—brought a return of Lushin’s disorder; however, he conquered the symptoms and transferred to Sable Weyr with Rillen and Coventina. Expecting—even hoping—to die at Sable, Lushin found himself embroiled in Rillen’s personal life and consistently irritated by Coventina’s attempts to “bring him back to life.” At last Lushin put his foot down when Coventina finally crossed the line, and transferred her out of Sable Weyr. To his surprise, the dragonhealer staff applauded his move; they had been outraged over Coventina’s treatment of Lushin, but not wanted to bring up what was clearly a private issue.
The incident actually brought Lushin out of his long depression, and he served Sable ably until word came that StarRise was open once more. He wasted no time in naming his successor, and was pleasantly surprised when Rillen also decided to return with him.

Personality
Lushin is a man who has suffered enormous personal tragedy—it’s not easy for a dragonless man to regain any sense of self, let alone persevere long enough to start his life over. Yet Lushin has done just that. That said, he suffers from periodic depression and post-traumatic stress disorder—nightmares, sleepwalking, and loss of appetite. It’s small wonder that he can be, at times, the most unpleasant being on all Pern.
A genuine smile from Lushin is a rarity, and mostly bestowed on dragons. Lushin loves dragons with all his heart, but his love for them causes him immense emotional pain. The dragons may seek to calm him, or comfort him, and he will take what comfort they offer. People are not comfortable with him when he’s around dragons, for Lushin then views other human beings as intruders. He even sees other dragonhealers, from apprentices to masters, as interlopers unless they’re working on patients. When aiding a dragon, Lushin gives orders and expects them to be obeyed; the apprentice or journeyman who fails comes in for a cruel or cutting remark. Otherwise, he does not converse when working. He is extraordinarily efficient, a fast worker who has learned how to save time and do a fine job.
He is not a good man to talk to. Even in the days when Altath was alive, Lushin was never good at heartfelt conversation; he was known as a man who could banter, make an amusing or sarcastic quip, but that was all. Lushin takes refuge in being blunt, and has no pity for people who take offense at his truthfulness. He also has no illusions. While he acknowledges that he likes and respects Rillen and others on his staff, Lushin does not delude himself that this means he’s capable of leading a “normal” life. Nor does he stand for others’ self-delusion. Losing Altath did one terrible thing to Lushin; it made him become more perceptive of others around him, and his judgment is as sharp as a scalpel. It is also merciless—Lushin is not one to ever hold back on his opinion. And when it comes to careless riders who injure their dragons, Lushin is a terror. While he is not one to rage, rant or bully, Lushin is proficient at delivering scathing insults, and makes a habit of reporting reckless flying to the appropriate wingleaders.
Although Lushin still fights the urge to commit suicide, he is more accepting of the fact that his time isn’t finished yet. But he yearns for Altath, and he cannot be consoled. Time has made human company more palatable to him, and when his depression lifts Lushin can be gentle, if grave, and show a little humor. Although he bickers with Rillen, it is a comforting routine for him, one that allows him to release stress without internalizing it. But when his mood darkens and Altath haunts his dreams to the point where he welcomes insomnia, Lushin hides behind a cold and grim exterior.
Altath was a large bronze, a gentle, good-humored dragon. He was a determined fighter of Thread, and sacrificed his life to get his rider to the ground safely. Anyone who remembers Lushin from the old days is certain to mention what a fine bronze Altath was, and how he and Lushin seemed to be beautifully matched—but they will also add that Lushin has changed too much for his old acquaintances to ever accept him again.
