Location Information
Located on StarRise Island, at the southeastern tip.
Badge Design
The StarRise Hold badge is composed of three sets of diagonal stripes, each set being a red stripe, a white stripe, and then a green stripe. The stripes run northeast to southwest.
Land Type
The area around StarRise Hold is mostly flat. The Setting Star River does run through the area, however, which forms a small canyon towards its mouth. StarRise Hold's beaches are known for their beauty and calm water.
Distinctive Landmarks
StarRise Hold is at the mouth of the Setting Star River. To the northwest is the Nightshadow Forest, as well as several mountains.
Main Crop/Production/Export
StarRise Hold has recently begun to expand their runner breeding, under the watchful eye of Master Peter. StarRise Hold also grows vast amounts of grains.
People
The people in the area are known for their hospitality and kindness. They're also been known in the past for being a bit dim, but this preconception has not been as strong as it was in the past, due to former Weyrwoman Kishandra's roots. (Although Lady Dashynne hasn't helped any.) Finally, they're known to pop open the wine bottles at any hint of a celebration.
Customs
When someone returns from a long trip, the people in the area commonly celebrate by opening a bottle of wine that was made in the Eastern Ring Islands. If the person has come from a far off region, it is considered polite to bring back a bottle of wine from that region to also be sampled at that time.
Special Holidays
As winter starts to approach the Eastern Ring Islands, the people commonly celebrate by slaughtering wherries and having a grand feast. StarRise Hold also has a First Thaw Gather every turn, which comes early in the turn, due to their proximity to the equator.
Overall View
Nice. People are real nice in this area.
Amusements
Nothing exceptionally ordinary. Gathers are the main source of amusement in this area.
Architecture
StarRise's architecture is kind of chunky, square, and solid, built with the pale native stone and having many windows. Things are built on a massive scale here.
Art
The favored art in StarRise Hold's territory is pottery, although tapestries come a close second. There has been talk of making a Potter's Hall somewhere in StarRise Hold's territory, with good rich soil for various types of pottery. Tapestries are done on a large scaleƒzcovering entire walls, works that can take turns to complete because of their large size.
Dress
The further you head south, the more revealing clothing is in StarRise Hold's territory. Emphasis is placed on wearing clothes that feel good. One notable exception to this is StarRise Hold, which has historically placed the emphasis on ornate and ceremonial clothing. The current Lord Holder is trying to change this, but it is a very slow process.
The average person will wear a loose shirt, and pants. Women are evenly split between wearing a skirt or pants, depending on their personal preference.
Gathers
StarRise Hold's First Thaw Gather is known throughout the Eastern Ring Islands as being one of the largest annual gathers of the turn. People come from the Horizon Peninsula all the way down to Twin Spires Island to participate.
The annual Windshear Loop Gather is also held each turn, celebrating the start of the boat race that begins and ends at Faerun Seahold. While the first day is the largest part of the gather, a smaller, more subdued version of the gather does continue at Faerun Seahold until the winners come into port.
Food
The strangest dish of the area has to be the Watersnake Steak. Large, 20 foot watersnakes are caught by ships and brought to shore, where the finest cooks in the area fry them into steaks. Other fish dishes are common, although wherry cuisine comes into its own during the Frost Celebration (more commonly called Wherry Day).
History
Until recent turns, the history of StarRise Hold was of a relatively sedate hold. However, the sudden shifts of power in recent times started when Lord Kisarin was discovered to have a bad heart, and not much time to live. His eldest daughter, Sarynne, was groomed for becoming the first Lady Holder in StarRise Hold's history. When Lord Kisarin died a turn later, Lady Sarynne was Confirmed.
Just one turn later, tragedy struck again. Lady Sarynne, trying to escape the attention of suitors, went riding off into Nightshadow Forest. She vanished, and her body was never found - just a bloodstained hat. Lord Kisarin's second daughter, Kishandra, was the Weyrwoman of StarRise Weyr, and could not possibly take over the Hold. His last daughter, Shanara, was only 15 turns old and an apprentice at the Harper Hall. Shanara formally gave up any claim she had on StarRise Hold, wanting nothing to do with running it.
The Lord Holders' Conclave declared Lady Sarynne legally dead, and gave the Hold to her cousin Drizzan, who had training as a Steward on the Northern Continent, and knew how to run a hold. Since then, the Hold has slowly calmed down.
Legends
Mothers often scare their children into being good by telling stories of the Wild Wher of Nightshadow Forest that gobbles up bad children who won't go to bed. Ever since Lady Sarynne vanished in the Nightshadow Forest, this story has gained quite a bit of impact on youngsters.
Slang
To the holders in StarRise Hold's territory, Lord Drizzan and Lady Varianna are often referred to as "Lord D" and "Lady V," no disrespect intended. Wherries are often called "birds"ƒza gross understatement.
