Yes, there are big cats. There are the cheetah types Ted Tuberman let loose, and Anne herself refers to a lion type (I think) in one of her books.
And yes, fictionally speaking there are the 'wildcats' which are a blend of cheetah and mountain lion, I think...

On the McCaffrey Pern side, it was some kind of big cat that started Moreta's Plague in the 6th (?) Pass.

I saw a picture of that cat in People of Pern. If it's as I remember, wasn't it rather on the smallish side? It looked a by like a lynx, to me... Here it is: info from People of Pern and other sources, picture down the page: www.pern.nl/pe/F_table.htmlFelines: the picture on the right portrays the infamous feline that played such a major role in the Sixth Pass epidemic and was made by Robin Wood for the book The People of Pern (1988). Lion: a feline that roamed the Southern Continent (often in groups, as they do on Terra). The Pernese lion's fur has a tawny brown color and they have yellow claws. A group of fourteen (adult) lions attacked the Telgar riders P'tero and M'leng when they rested after their love-making when they were on a Telgar Weyr outing to the Southern Continent during first-month 258. The riders had accidentally chose a spot just above the cave in which the pride of lions lived as the place for their love-making [RSR/15:370, 16:374]. About the lions on the Southern Continent is known that they at least lived on the plains near the Malay River because it was there that the before mentioned attack on the dragonriders took place [RSR/15:366-367]. The attacking lions were eaten by the rescuing dragons. The Telgar brown dragon Collith remarked that they were quite tasty [RSR/16:373]. The lions were the result of a breeding program that was executed by the settler Ted Tubberman. They had broken out of Calusa (after killing Tubberman) and bred quite handily in the wild. They were some of the sport beasts Tubberman had been experimenting with. This information was obviously still common knowledge at the end of the First Interval since Leopol (a lowly helper lad) told this to P'tero, one of the injured lovers (RSR/16:374).

Yup, that sounds about right to me. As for Wildcat Hold, that is purely fannish. Had some fun plots around that place, too. Like the heir to the hold that Impressed a green and so is definately no longer the heir to the hold, and his rather questionable family... hrm.

Just wondering was StarRise Hold affected by the volcano or earthquakes?

Oh, most definitely. They'll be mostly recovered by now, though, I think.

Is that "oh, dear" an "oh, goodie" in disguise? Because survival is always an option, you know. Or, if you like, lose selectively....
Personally, I have MUCH more problem with killing underage characters now that I'm a Mom, but feel free. Just remember that PG 13 means kids get munched/scorched/dismembered off screen. Adults can have all the gore you want. ;>

Tubberman had stolen some cheetah embryos and fooled around with mentasynth on them. There were prides of lions in the southern continent and there was fighting between them and dragons in Dragons Eye(?). Dragon's Eye also held mention of a pelt that by description could only be that of a tiger. The feline in Moreta gave me a different mental picture than what showed up in People of Pern. Description always said "Jaguar" to my mind and the POP pic is more like a wildcat.
Actual domestic cats could very well be bred to be much larger than is commonly seen. It wouldn't take more than a few well thought out generations to see a difference.

I have to agree that breeding the biggest by the biggest has amazing results...evolution is not usually a slow, steady process, but more of a leaps and bounds intertwoven with centuries of stability. People just add a new selective force.

Domestic cats and small wildcats have been known to interbreed. That gives you a huge size jump. As for Tubberman's cats. I always had the impression he was working with several varieties of cat and see no problem with them being on the islands. They are adaptable animals who will fill any predatory niche they can find. As for how they got there... probably the same way they got to the northern continent in Moreta's day or how they got to Las Vegas here on Earth - people who found them fascinating imported them legally or otherwise as pets or as curiosities and then lost control of them. Never underestimate the ingenuity or stupidity of human beings.
I'd like to read this lion story...
