The obvious Pernese treatment for lactose intolerance is to avoid eating or drinking dairy products. But if you do that, where would you get your calcium from? My doctor has recommended eating tuna and salmon. Do those fish exist on Pern? Are there other possible calsium sources?

Yogurt actually has minimal lactose. Some veggies contain calcium, and certainly there are calcium rich fish on Pern!

Are there goats on Pern? Goats milk is used a lot of children who are lactose intollerant because it doesn't have the large fat goblets like cow's milk. It is much easier for the stomach to digest.

The DragonLover's Guide does show goats, so I'd say yes.

Is that what causes lactose intolerance? The fat in the milk? Is goat milk healthier?

Actually, lactose intolerance is caused by the sugar in milk--lactose. Different formulations can cushion or exacerbate; fat free milk is worst, because there's no fat to slow things down. Yogurt and hard cheese have far less lactose and are better tolerated. I don't know that goat milk is actually better for lactose intolerance, but it is definitely easier to digest for many people.
