Physical Description: N’shi is 6’2, broad-shouldered and slim from turns of dragonriding. His black hair is curly and cut short; his eyes are a piercing blue. He has regular features—well-spaced eyes, straight nose, full mobile mouth—and an open, pleasant expression that can turn icy with rage or displeasure. N’shi has Threadscore on his left arm and cheek, and a small scar on his right eyelid; other than that, his looks are unmarred.
N’shi isn’t concerned with clothes—so long as they fit, he could care less—but his color scheme is limited to black, dark blue, dark grey, white or light grey. (He fit in perfectly at Sable). He wears no jewelry, but keeps several weapons: a beltknife, a long dagger that misses being a short sword by name alone, and a small handheld crossbow. (Media reference: Hugh Jackman).
Background and Timeline:
Naishi was the firstborn child of Nobel, a glassmaker, and Serenay, a worker in Igen Weyr’s Lower Caverns. Naishi enjoyed watching his father work, and had begun learning the craft when he was tapped to Stand at age 14. His parents were so excited by the idea of their child Impressing that they insisted Naishi continue to Stand until he was too old, adding he had plenty of time to work on his glassmaking skills. At 17, Naishi Impressed bronze Albath.
By the time he finished weyrling training, N’shi knew he wanted to see more of Pern than Igen. His chance came when he met a pretty greenrider named Ysivel at an Igen Gather; she was from Crystal Weyr, and had come visiting for the fun of it. Smitten, N’shi applied for a transfer to Crystal to be with Ysivel; the two weyrmated within days of N’shi’s arrival.
Unfortunately, N’shi’s luck soured after that—he was transferred to a wing led by bronzrider K’zin, a notorious bully at Crystal, and had countless run-ins with a man who would not accept any divergence from his opinions and orders. The marks on N’shi’s record for insubordination, had they been tallied as K’zin wished, would have covered several hides with an appendix attached.
Because he had been promised a transfer to another wing, N’shi stuck it out until Ysivel’s Navareth rose in turn 16. K’zin’s Kath won the flight. Afterwards, Ysivel charged him with rape, claiming that once the flight was over K’zin assaulted her. K’zin denied it, saying any additional activity was solely the result of their dragons’ broadcast emotions. When N’shi punched K’zin following the hearing, he was demoted and grounded for three months. Furious, Ysivel and N’shi, accompanied by several other riders, went rogue in protest.
At first, the plan was to stay Weyrless for a turn, then find a Weyr and transfer. However, the band soon found that returning to a Weyr would mean facing punishment for going rogue; none of the riders felt they deserved flogging or demotion, and so they remained Weyrless. However, the life was hard; when Ysivel became pregnant, N’shi tried to convince her to return to Crystal to give birth, adding he would go with her to face his own punishment. Ysivel refused. Their daughter Ariane was born in a cave near Southern Weyr, but Ysivel died from blood loss a day later. Heartbroken, N’shi took Ariane and returned to Igen Weyr a month later to accept whatever punishment was meted out. He was assigned to the Weyrling Wing, with any rise in rank to go no higher than Wingrider, and a transfer to a fighting wing dependent solely on his good behavior.
N’shi applied himself and earned the transfer to a regular wing within 21 months. His work ethic and dedication made him a valued wingmate, and he rediscovered the reasons why he’d wanted to be a dragonrider in the first place. The Weyrleader decided to commute his sentence and placed him in a fighting wing under a bronzerider named L’mar. L’mar promoted N’shi to Wingsecond, and became a mentor and trusted friend. When Thread maimed the older rider, N’shi hoped to be made Wingleader; however, he was deliberately passed over due to his past misconduct. L’mar made him promise to look after his daughter Linja, and urged him to leave Igen for a Weyr that would appreciate having a rider of his skill. Skeptical, N’shi applied to Sable Weyr, and was shocked when his transfer was accepted.
N’shi was made leader of Golden Sands Wing. However, when Albath caught Ilvahth, the senior queen, he became Weyrleader, and gained the respect of his fellow riders as well as Zahlenka, Ilvahth’s rider. Lenni and N’shi found they made a good working team, and N’shi found Lenni to be a better friend than any he’d had. As for Ilvahth and Albath, their mating flights are a foregone conclusion at this point; Sable riders speculate just how long it’ll be before N’shi and Lenni start having “hatchlings” of their own.
One thing could have ruined all that for N’shi, and that was his early involvement with the Commandos, a group of riders from various Southern weyrs dedicated to wiping out the jermander trade. As N’shi and his gang of renegade riders had killed or frightened off their share of jermander couriers, N’shi decided to throw in with the Commandos, and soon discovered the group was traveling down a road that he, as Weyrleader, couldn’t follow. He withdrew, periodically attempting to get the Commandos to give up their mission before it was too late. He succeeded with several, and other riders chose to lie low rather than chase renegades; however, by the time goldrider Karayan informed Lenni of the Commandos’ existence, N’shi was frustrated to find that for every rider he convinced to stop, two more had taken their place.
Currently, N’shi is engrossed with his duties as Weyrleader and as a parent, natural and adoptive. His blood-offspring, numbering four, are a handful for their foster-parents; his adoptive daughter Linja, L’mar’s daughter, has arrived at Sable with two young friends, and N’shi has a long list of riders who need to be beaten before they attempt to do anything with her.

Personality:
N’shi is a born leader—committed, hard-working, and charismatic. He is also arrogant, but that’s beside the point; as the saying goes, it isn’t bragging if you can do it! And N’shi can do it; he managed to get 15 riders to walk away from Crystal Weyr and kept them with him for five Turns. They went back when he did, after begging him not to do it.
Keenly intelligent, N’shi is able to pick up almost any tool—from chisel to needle—and learn to use it. If he hadn’t Impressed, he would have been a Mastersmith or Harper by now. His unfortunate choices held him back from rank for some time, but N’shi’s sense of responsibility is countered by his strong independent streak, his outspokenness, and his refusal to give respect where he feels it hasn’t been earned. He is ruthless; when he wants someone out of his way, he’ll make sure they get there, one way or another. The only thing that held him back from killing K’zin was knowing he would also kill the man’s dragon, but N’shi has no compunction about ending the lives of renegades or any other who threatens a dragonrider’s life. He won’t hesitate to harm someone unless he has a good reason not to; he will listen to advice, weigh it, and even consider the option of mercy (a rather alien concept to him).
N’shi is primarily a protector in his relationships; he can show great patience to those he deems worthy of it, and Lenni gets to see a side of him few others do—his playful hedonism and introspection. He is courtly with the ladies, a loyal and generous friend, and a ferocious enemy of anyone who harms friends or kindred. He adores children and is devoted to his own, even Linja; but there’s no danger of them being spoiled to death. N’shi’s a firm believer in discipline and responsibility. His brood might be the offspring of a Weyrleader, but that’s no excuse for them not to work hard and achieve something of their own.
As a rider, N’shi knows when to take orders and when to ask questions, and he is a very good fighting rider. He lives to learn new things; his curiosity is insatiable. In private, he’s a charming man, witty with a gallows sense of humor, and a gentle if relentless teaser of his friends. Few can accept him as the rumored murdering rogue rider of his past once they get to know him well.
Pets: None. Ariane, Dalshi, Nainazon, and Tamshi are pets enough.
Dragon: Albath
Color/Appearance: New bronze/large
Age: 23
Where/When Impressed: Igen Weyr/10.03.01
