Nyssa is very, very, girly-girly.She is medium build but appears fragile and uses that to her advantage whenever possible.She wears jewels every chance she gets and dresses to impress (even her riding leathers are tooled and sewn with designs and embellished as much as possible while still allowing them functionality). Her clothes are always of the finest materials possible and tailored with care. Whenever a new supply train arrives at the weyr either she or one of her devotees will be there sifting through the items to try to claim the choicest goods for her use.

Nyssa is spoiled and has never grown out of the habit, and doesn't see why she shouldn't have her every whim catered to. Having impressed a queen has not done anything to disabuse her of this notion. Nyssa wraps others around her finger with very little effort or thought-- and is manipulative and exploitative when it means getting something she wants. She also knows the value of tact and biding her time to an end. She believes firmly in the adage that one can catch more flitters with sweetsauce than pickle. She does go out of her way to be discreet about her manipulations.
She is selfish, and universally puts her and Twendith's needs first. Everyone/anything else comes 2nd. As a child (before her mother's death) she was doted upon by her father and mother, and she was given special consideration by other members of the hold. Growing up she was constantly reminded by her aunt that as the illegitimate child she had no rights and no future except what she could take for herself. Her aunt impressed upon her that her physical beauty was of extreme importance, and that when she grew older she should be sure to use her then budding sex appeal to her advantage. One of a handful of illegitimate offspring, Nyssa was not expected to amount to much. Despite this (or possibly because she was her father's only daughter) she was spoiled and treated very well. When her mother became pregnant once more--and died in childbirth, Nyssa was sent away to live with her maternal aunt at Lemos Hold.(this was at age 9) It was tacitly understood that there would be no further contact unless her father was able to use her to cement an agreement.

While under her aunt Shiblee's care, Nyssa was kept active and busy learning all the womanly arts. During this time her aunt was able to drill into her niece the finer points of manipulation of men and women. And how to talk or bend others into providing what was desired. Shiblee always made certain that Nyssa was well groomed and immaculately dressed--quoting that one must look wealthy to be wealthy. This early indoctrination into materialism stayed with Nyssa even after she grew up. Shiblee made no secret of the fact that she hoped to use Nyssa as a pawn in her own quest for increased status.
Shiblee ruled Nyssa's life with an iron fist in all aspects-- something that Nyssa resented and fought against as much as possible. Shiblee found ways to punish her and force her to behave correctly "for her future station". The benefit to her upbringing was that Nyssa learned to be ruthless, and was exposed to some of the darker aspects of power play. During this time she began to realize how important it was to be in a position (in relationships, in work, in social standing) of power. She grew to crave respect and enjoyed being fawned upon for either her looks or accomplishments.
Nyssa was never allowed to be unescorted with members of the opposite sex. When at the age of 17 she was searched by Telgar Weyr for the gold on the sands, Nyssa had to fight her aunt tooth and nail for the permission to go. (Shiblee knew that if her niece was exposed to the free-wheeling and "morally lax" lifestyle of the weyr there was little chance of her coming home untouched, and that this would certainly affect bargaining value)
Aunt Shiblee's lessons were not wasted on her and Nyssa used them against her aunt, and in the end she was given grudging permission to go-- "but only because it is a queen egg" and even if she did not impress it might be a fact she could use in bargaining.
