Background & Personality: Valkyra was never an easy person. Before Impression she was headstrong, willful, and appeared incredibly self assured. Those who liked her called her a capable woman to be reckoned with. Those who disliked her called her a contentious, know-it-all bitch. She actually had many self-doubts, but over compensated by being out-going and assertive. Part of this came from never knowing quite where she fit in. Her family loved her, but wanted her to have a better life in a larger hold. Her foster family loved her too, but her foster brothers often teased her about being a mountain girl. She never felt a part of either world.
Impression seemed to soften Valkyra somewhat, as she learned to put Halvath before herself and found unconditional love from one person she ALWAYS fit in with. However, she has never been able to have truly close inter-personal relationships. She holds people at arm's length because she fears anyone getting to know the real her. This is not to say that her bed is often empty. On the contrary, she takes great pleasure in men, she just rarely allows one to grow close to her. She was quite out-going and friendly, just never really developed close relationships by giving of herself. She is always well groomed and dressed, always having wanted to look better than her shepherding family.
Valkyra is incredibly organized and has a near photographic memory. As Weyrwoman these abilities proved invaluable and allowed her to organize the entire Weyr, the wings, and still have time left to amuse herself. She feels a great responsibility toward her subordinates, since she does not entirely trust anyone's competence. She rides the weyrlings hard and the weyrlingmaster harder. When a dragon or rider is injured Valkyra takes it personally and feels as if she has failed and is to blame. However, she does not show her vulnerability. The face she projects to the outside world at such times is one of anger.
Since contracting the plague in Igen Hold and being afflicted with a very high fever and coma for several days, Valkyra's various personality traits have become magnified to remarkable degrees. So much so, in fact, that she can rarely control her emotions and is prone to outbursts. This inability to control emotions has also lead to an inability to accurately assess situations, and her decision making has become erratic. It can even be said that she has edged to the far side of sanity.
Where she was once strong willed, she is now domineering and cannot bear to lose control of situations. Where once she was opinionated, now she cannot even hear another side. Her word is law and anyone who contradicts her is an idiot, or worse. Where she was once cavalier toward men and relationships, she is now cold and rather ruthless. She uses, abuses, and discards men at will. And her sense of responsibility for her subordinates has doubled and redoubled, she no longer trusts any of her riders to perform during 'Fall and runs endless drills. During 'Fall she pushes the Queen's wing beyond exhaustion.
Her formerly well masked self doubts have given way to periods of intense self hatred and a belief that everywhere she goes people look down on and make fun of her. This results in Valkyra's being unable to bring herself to leave her weyr for hours and even days at a time. When she does force herself back into society she over compensates even more than she used to, allowing the domineering side of her personality to show and losing herself in wine, sex, and wild abandon. She dances from one end of the extreme to the other with little warning between mood swings. Classic manic depressive, with tendencies toward paranoia and agoraphobia. Her hard, incredibly long drilling sessions may also be slightly obsessive-compulsive.
She no longer seems to feel physical pain, but emotionally she is an open wound. She has also begun to distrust the other people in the Weyr, having become convinced that they are both jealous of her and believe that she is unworthy of her position. She sees plots wherever she looks, and trusts no one. In sane moments she realizes that she is lonely and makes overtures to old friends. Then her madness envelops her again and she forces them abruptly away. Her love for Halvath, however, has never wavered and she sees the Queen as the best and brightest of dragons. She cossets her, pampers her, and gives in to her every whim.
Dragon
Name: Halvath
Color: Gold, a dark tawny shade that looks almost copper in some lights.
Physical Appearance: Halvath is a medium sized Queen, but has the attitude of the largest gold. She has two parallel scars on her left front flank from thread score.
Personality: Halvath is a boisterous, commanding presence. On good days she is "in control" of situations, on bad days she is bossy and authoritarian. Much like her rider in personality, with all the problems that entails. Formerly she was slightly aloof, preferring her own company or that of a few select bronzes. Now she takes her frustrations with her rider's mental state out on the other dragons, having become disdainful of bronzes, contemptuous of browns, and taking no notice of blues. She is particularly hard on greens, and often orders them around. She is respectful, but cool to the other Queens, not wanting them to know what Valkyra is truly going through.
Abilities: Halvath is an exceptionally agile flier, a fact she never lets anyone forget. She can turn quickly, and enjoys acrobatic stunts in the air. She is notoriously hard to catch and wily during mating flights.
Relationships: Halvath and Valkyra are extremely close. This closeness, however, has left neither rider nor dragon very much room for other relationships. Now that Halvath must spend even more time than usual trying to understand her rider and pull her back toward sanity, the queen has no time for other relationships. She will take notice of her rider's lovers and weyrmates, showing affection where Valkyra does, but she disregards most other people. She is, however, marginally more tolerant of children than her rider, considering herself an exemplary mother to her hatchlings.
