Welcome to StarRise!
What you really need to know:
1) Relax. This is supposed to be fun!
2) Writing is optional, but we’d love to have your stories! To write stories you need to:
a) make up a character
b) post a character (under the character section)
c) suffer thru any questions or corrections for world/timeline issue. This looks scarier than it is, really!
d) write!!!!
e) submit your story to starrise.zine@gmail.com
f) tell us what level of editing you want, from cursory to in depth.
3) You’ll want to have read at least a few of Anne McCaffrey’s Pern books to understand what’s going on. I’d recommend the original trilogy (Dragonflight, Dragonquest, The White Dragon) as well as the Harper Hall Trilogy as good places to start. Other reading is great…but we are set in an alternate timeline some 250 turns after the events in TWD. Aivas was never discovered, thread still falls, and some technology may have been lost in the meantime. Ideas for stories to do and avoid can be found under: Stories: Acceptable/Unacceptable, under Out of the Blue. Submission Guidelines can be found under "What Makes Our Editors Happy", page 2 of General Discussions.
4) StarRise is the central club, but we’re also revived a number of “shared world” clubs under the central banner. Feel free to write at the other Weyrs, but we ask that half your stories take place at StarRise and her territories.
5) Ranked characters come with writing requirements. If you want a bronzerider, you have to be willing to write stories. (Goldriders are currently only available at some of the NPC weyrs.) There are also requirements for wingleaders, craft masters, etc. More information is available at: Announcements: Support Requirements for Ranking Characters.
You can have a blue, green or brown dragon without writing a story…but if you make up a character sheet, your character may still be used in other people’s stories! (People do have to get your permission first.) Apprentices, drudges, holders (unranked), etc, also have no writing requirements…but you can still write if you want to!
6) Art is always welcome!
7) This club is PG-13; please keep posts, stories, and art to that guideline. If you are under 18, we’d prefer that a parent or guardian be aware that you are joining us, but there is no age requirement.
8) Information about current setting can be found at: Announcements: Current Setting. That fills you in on the most recent history. Information about StarRise can be found under the heading: StarRise Weyr Territory. Look there for Characters and Locations, as well as places to post to find people to plot with (Character Personals) and to see some developing plots (Plots in Pondering).
9) Each issue will have a theme (optional) and a deadline (firm). Deadlines will be Feb 1st and August 1st yearly. Themes can be found under: Out of the Blue: Fanzine Themes. Issue 26 (which is the first issue of the ReAwakened Club) has a deadline of Feb 1st 2009.
10) The zine will be distributed through email and through file download at the SR_I_Weyrs@yahoogroups.com website. You can join the mailing list via the sign up box at the bottom of the page.
11) Ask any of us for more information! Club leaders are Hope, Chantal and Anna, and depending on the month one or another of us may be more readily available. Other members are also generally happy to answer questions!
