If he were still alive, I'd say John Colicos for Fax, hands down. He played Baltar on old Battlestar Galactica and Commander Kor (I think) on Star Trek Classic.
For a live actor...Can I suggest David Caruso (Horatio Caine) just because I hate Horatio Caine? (g)
I like the idea of Alan Rickman as Lytol. If not him, then Clint Eastwood. If you've seen him in Gran Torino, I have that in mind, though not so much with all the cussing. (g)

If he can SING?!?! Oh, barbaric youth! Listen to him as Che in Evita. He has the most glorious voice! I've not seen that, but I have the original Broadway soundtrack for The Secret Garden, and his performance as Archibald there is pure win. I'm trying to remember how Anne described Robinton's vocal range, though... if it matches Patinkin's then I say he'd be good for the role. My first pick for Fax would be Brian Dennehy, but he may be a bit old for the role. Speaking of actors named Brian... I would cast Brian Blessed as Fandarel. Sans beard, of course, but he's done that before, and he can go from soft-voiced to booming yells in a snap. I would shift Alan Rickman over to D'ram, and cast Derek Jacobi as Lytol... but that's just me.

I heartily second Brian Blessed as Fandarel. But as Lytol . . . if he weren't so aged already, I'd say James Cromwell.

Test post, to see if Internet Explorer 8 will let me post here.
Kris--Hm! Any spots for Derek Jacoby, if we're going to look at famous Shakespearean actors?

Derek Jacobi (one of my favorite actors, along with Blessed!) . . . hmm. Who was Fandarel's assistant again? Or maybe Wansor?

Not Wansor... and not Terry (Fandarel's assistant) either... and your point about Cromwell being too aged for Lytol stands against Jacobi there as well. They're 69 and 70 respectively, but Lytol's not quite that old, is he? *sigh*

And, hey, as long as we're casting the Pern movie, how about the StarRise movie? I'm wondering about Hugo Weaving for Lord Kirebal. Maybe not enough of a beard, though.

And the burning question is, who would play F'lerin?

To make it more interesting... for any character who already has a physical model, even if that model is an actor, cast someone else in the role.
