Well in canon for Ista Weyr, A Gift of Dragons: Ever the Twain, by Anne McCaffrey, a short story what pass not too sure but over the age 14 not 12, and apprenticeship/marring 16 Turns, hope it helps.

The age of Candidates is really a matter decided by the Weyrleaders of each Weyr. I don't think the dragon really cares how old his human is, as long as the human is actually there. I know in MasterHarper of Pern, some weyrlings were exceptionally young. F'lar himself was nine or so when he Impressed Mnementh, I think. I don't have the book right here, but I remember reading something along those lines.

Now I've got a question for you, could a Candidate be say just 'walk the table' not assigned and be searched by a very keen blue and his rider at a gather, say 18 turns? I am just asking for I've got an idea for a dolphineer but just tossing out idea here.

I'm not sure how the dolphineers do it, but I got the impression from Dragonsong that, by the time they let an apprentice walk the tables to journeyman, the masters have already decided where the new journeyman will be assigned. They wouldn't want a journeyman to stay at the hall for long after walking the tables.
As for the rest of the idea, plenty of people have been Searched at Gathers, so that would work.

Say they had their assignment, but while waiting for their transportation e. g. ship/dragon rider to show up say for an example delay by a storm be in on evening tide, and like a rest day a gather and search then. I still can't type/write for long, but I do have some idea in back of my mind, as for the SRA I don't know if I am going to be able to 'see" it. using an e.g. I know better AoP - The Atlas of Pern (Karen Wynn Fonstad) via print before my sign weaken, and online via Han's site www.pern.nl/ I can see some of it, for the color background isn't 'blinding me'

Ginny, I'm not sure I understand the question you just posted. Tell me if I've got this right: You want to know if a new journeyman can be Searched before they arrive at their first posting? Almost anyone can be Searched at any time if their is a logical, reasonable reason for a dragon to be near them. Most people on Pern, however, don't ever get near a dragon unless it's during an official Search. Halls can contract with their protecting Weyr to deliver their journeyman to their new posting - but it's not a free service and Halls can frequently choose to not finance it. Why don't you email us at starrise.zine@gmail.com and tell us exactly what scenario you have in mind for this Search, and we'll let you know if it'll work?
