Heya all. My name's Geo, and I happened upon this lovely place whilst wandering the vast internet. From what I've read there's quite a bit of talent hiding here, and I've decided I'd like to be a part of it.
That said, I'll have a DragonHealer ready for play sometime mid-week.
Pleasure to meet all of you.
Geo~

Hi, Geo! Let me be the third person to welcome you to our happy corner of insanity! This is a great time to join...issue 1 is available for download, and you still have just under 3 months to write for issue 2! Do you want to share anything about yourself, other interests, etc? --Hope

*Drags self back in*
Sure, what a week, stupid AP Testing.
Anywho, I'm a Junior in High School, a Boy Scout (Oo-rah!), and a Insane fanatical actor on my High School stage.
I've been a DrOP addict since Freshman year, and found this place while looking to write something other than Round-Robin Fic.
Hrmm... I sing and am a bookworm in general and depending on my mod am either very quiet or very sociable.
And I'm horribly behind on sleep, but that's more of a way of life these days.
Me in a nutshell.
Anywho, quick question as I haven't read everything on the site yet. For my lovely DragonHealer, do you all want specific dates of Impression, Journeyman knots and so on? I've got a pretty old/wise dude in the making who's rather obbsessive in everything he does, and if I can get away with being vauge and saving brain cells it'd be cool.
Save time and headaches.

A very eclectic collection of interests! We're happy to have you aboard!
One thing to consider about this character...was he a dragonhealer who Impressed, or a rider who was unable to fly fall, either by his own or his dragon's injury, who went on to become a dragonhealer? Anna has a great post about a dragonrider's day--I think under writing Pern--that looks at the minimal free time a rider has. Having two professions just isn't practical; a dragonhealer who Impresses would have more opportunity than most to pursue his Craft, but would still be limited. I'd recommend that he got his Journeyman's cords before getting Searched, as it's unlikely he'd have time to pursue them as the rider of a fighting dragon--unless, as I said, an injury prevented the pair from flying thread.
There are a good selection of characters listed under the CHARACTERS section, so you can see the usual format. All characters stay posted for a bit so that people can ask questions, and you may be asked to revise for continuity or world issues. It would be good to have dates for the big events--birth, Impression, Walking the Tables--but you don't need dates for postings, etc, except for when he came to StarRise. Don't worry about being perfect, you can revise as you go.
We look forward to meeting him!
(OK, or her...I shouldn't assume!)

Now that's interesting, as I've consideredother Weyrs who have stipulated that a DragonHealer *must* have a dragon or he(she) could never advance past the rank of Apprentice due to the fact that it was nigh impossible to communicate with the patient.
*Ponders*

That's an interesting point that I had not considered.
Anna? Chantal? Anybody with an opinion or examples?
From the example of Veternary medicine and pediatrics...having someone else translate is not that unusual, but it is true that having a dragon to translate would be a boon. So what would be more valuable to the Weyr...the rider, or the dragon healer? And how would a Weyr balance that?
Thanks for opening a very interesting topic!

A dragonrider simply doesn't have TIME to be a full-time dragonhealer. There's no way around it. However, communication with dragons DOES have a work around: the rider of the dragon. If the rider is temporarily unavailable (which should only happen if the rider is severely wounded and/or unconscious after an immediate injury) then a goldrider and her dragon would be on-hand to A) calm the injured dragon, and B) relay information from the injured dragon to the dragonhealer. Considering that a dragon and rider are both going to be injured only during Threadfall (with rare exceptions), a queen-full Weyr will always have at least one gold that is Weyr-bound by a clutch, either soon to be laid or currently on the sands. Think of it this way: you don't want YOUR doctor to be a half-trained nurse who only works a couple hours a week, do you?

Touche, touche.
Mmmm... Two choices right now, the first being that he lost his dragon due to thread or something.
Or, his dragon isn't(and hasn't been) able to fight thread due to permanant injury. (Blindness in one eye, or somesuch.)
*Mulls it over*

Another interesting possibility would be if his hatchling was injured in the chaotic birth process (mentioned in at least one of the books) or was born with a deformity--congenital cataract in one eye? Malformed wing?--that prevented threadfighting from the beginning. That would have been a really interesting back story--grieving much like parents do with a handicapped child, then finding a way to move forward. In such a case, dragonhealing would be a natural choice, as both "rider" and dragon could study it full time, and the dragon could actually become a diagnostician him or herself. ("He has pain along this nerve, and the left front leg feels broken.") Just an idea. You have to watch us, here--we're prone to jumping in with ideas with little warning and no provocation.

Oh, I do like that idea, Hope! If you don't choose that option, Geo, I just might!

Thats...awsomely evil.
To the point of epicness.
Mmmm, Three choices then. A. Blind in one eye at Birth=Epic Backstory B. Weak Immune System=Sick often C. Deformed wing thing.
Options options...
