Gar FishCommon term for a family (taxonomically speaking) of Pernese ocean-going fish, ranging in size from the Istan Gar (4-6 feet) up to the Southern Striped Gar (around 50 feet). Named by the original colonists for their similarity in appearance to Earth gars (particularly the long, tooth-filled jaws), their ecological niche on Pern is more akin to that of sharks. Gar fish are not only edible but quite tasty. There are three main species in the Eastern Ring Islands: - Sand Gar - solitary hunters that prowl the bottom of tropical shallows (7-10 feet)
- Rocky Gar - found close to the coast in temperate waters, hunting among rocky shoals (15-20 feet)
- Eastern Ring Gar - the largest of the regional species, they are more common in the deeper waters between or along either side of the chain, and prey mainly on migrating schools of fish. (35-40 feet)
(I devised the basics of the gar fish shortly after I took on Hold Gar for ForTen, mainly to create a reason in my mind for why there are two seaholds on Pern named Gar - that is, Hold Gar near Southern Boll and Gar Sea Hold on Ista Island. Why? Both holds are near large concentrations of gar fish, and were named for the common catch... however, apart from the name and basic appearance, I'd never expanded upon it. The above bestiary entry sprang fully-grown from my head just tonight. )

I do have DLGP-The Dragonlover's Guide to Pern Vol 1 and 2. Also found in topical waters are redfin, as large as a man arm trave in schools, which when together its make the water red., and whitefin, DoP The Dolphins of Pern are my informaton. I would gather you find in the tropical area, around here.
