I'm a little concerned about how Z'rat is going to appear, personality wise, but he's like a fine wine, he gets better with age.
Z'rat and Olenth
Character name: Z'rat
Gender: Male
Occupation/rank: bluerider
Birthdate: 15.2.14
Birthplace: Telgar, Smith CraftHall
Hair: Mahogany brown cut short and almost always messy. His "best" look is to slick it down with water so that it spikes as it dries. Usually, he looks like he just went flying without a helmet or rolled out of bed.
Eyes: Chocolate brown, almond shaped, not very expressive
Build (height/weight): 6'2", 195 lb (give or take)
General appearance: Z'rat has a long torso, but not so long as to make him appear oddly proportioned. His shoulders are broad and his chest deep, his arms are muscular, and his hands long and graceful. His waist is trim and his legs firm, but anyone can clearly see that Z'rat focuses on his upper body in a work out. He is attractive, but the scowls he favor make most people back off before getting to close. He has an unfortunate habit of wearing clothes that are either mismatched or ill-fitting, but that's more because he hates "wasting time" at the tailors than anything else.
Sexual orientation: homosexual
Firelizards: none
Personality: On first impression, Z'rat comes over as irritated, annoyed, or bitter, even when he's trying to be polite. That's usually because he is irritated, annoyed or bitter. Although, to be honest, the bitter part is new. If he's irritated, it's because he is A) hungover, B) having lost something, or C) late. If he's annoyed it's because A) You're female. B) He was just speaking to a woman or child, or C) He's about to go talk to a woman and/or child. Bitter, as I said, is new. Bitter is reserved for flirts and greenriders. (See History)
After first impressions, the most common descriptor for Z'rat is "women hater" which isn't entirely accurate. He respects women who have rank, or are sensible and honest. He might (might) like a woman who speaks her mind. He absolutely cannot stand flirts, idiots and gossips and although he hides it well, he's a little afraid of the quiet and/or shy ones.
The second descriptor for Z'rat is blunt. Speaking his mind isn't a problem for Z'rat, it's his second favorite hobby.
The third descriptor is violent temper. If Z'rat doesn't like someone, they will know. He'll tell them. If they don't "go away", he'll tell them again. Third time, he just might throw a punch. Usually this is because he is either A) Drunk, B) Drinking or C) Hungover.
Under the bluster and the temper, Z'rat does have a real heart, and it might not be gold, but it's certainly silver. He's loyal to his friends and looks out for them, and although he says he hates children, some of them tend to be fascinated by him. He loves small animals, although he refuses to accept one as a pet. He's also young and immature, which people tend to forget when he's in their face over something, and that youth gets him in over his head a lot more than it should. Z'rat has two passions in his life, Olenth (and the Weyr because the are, to Z'rat, inseparable) and glassblowing. Anyone who ever doubts that there's more to Z'rat than anger and violence need only to see the way he tends to Olenth, or see one of his glass creations to know that under the rapids is a deep river.
General history: Z'rat, born Zanderat, was the third son of a master smith, his family lived at Telgar, where his father trained apprentices to make plowshares and wagon axles. Z'rat, however, was always drawn to the glass forges, and the magic of molten glass. When his fascination proved steadfast, it was arranged that Z'rat, then age nine, could visit the forges so long as he stayed with an aging master smith, Turero, and his grandson Alurero. Ro was the first to call Z'rat Zander, and the pair were closer than brothers within two sevendays. The two boys had a glorious childhood and darted in and out of trouble together until when they became apprentices of a glass smith at thirteen, and it was unthinkable that Zander and Ro would 'apprentice to different smiths. By the time they were sixteen, the boys had different masters, Alurero had a knack for simple things, bowls, cups, vases and such while Zanderat's talents were more fanciful. Goblets, sculptures, sun catcher, these were Zanderat's talents.
It was spring, their sixteenth Turn, and the boys were working when it happened. A visitor came to the glass forge, an exceptionally beautiful woman, who startled them with her greeting. Zanderat had been gathering glass on his blowpipe, and simple lost the gather. Alurero, however, had already started, and inhaled molten glass.
It was a sevenday before Zanderat could return to the forge, and another before he could bring himself to begin blowing glass again. About a month later, Zanderat was Searched, and left.
Three Turns later, Z'rat brought Olenth to meet his family. Before he left, he went back to the glass forge, and found Turero waiting for him. When he left, Z'rat carried with him a blow pipe and a list of drills. After Telgar's next hatching, the Weyrlings each received a curious gift. A tiny glass dragon, tinted like their dragons.
Life at Telger Weyr, however, wasn't dull for Z'rat. By the time his class had graduated, his group, was already becoming infamous for their dragonpoker games, which usually ended in a brawl or...well, other nocturnal activities. Among the group was an older greenrider named I'len, he was older than Z'rat by three turns, and had impressed at fourteen.
Z'rat fell for I'len slowly, knowing that among dragonriders, monogamy was a joke, but still, when Olenth won Ylsath's mating flight three times in a row, he thought there was hope. He went slowly, carefully trying to draw I'len into his bed, and into his heart. On his twentieth birthing day, I'len proposed they become Weyrmates.
They were teased about it, but I'len laughed it off and Z'rat ignored it, and people began to think that the impetuous, hard headed and hard hitting young blue rider might actually be maturing.
It didn't last.
Z'rat came back to the weyr after a night on watch. (Just because he wasn't fighting all the time didn't mean that Z'rat didn't fight...) I'len was gone. His things were gone. And lying smashed on the floor was the 'kissing dragons' statue Z'rat had made to celebrate their one Turn anniversary. That evening, Z'rat found I'len cuddling with a brownrider in the dining cavern. The public venue didn't stop I'len from openly scorning Z'rat, humiliating the bluerider and earning the greenrider a black eye and a bloody lip. The brownrider wisely stayed out of the proceedings. The next two sevendays were filled with scenes, usually between Z'rat and a greenrider. And although now, five sevendays after that fateful day, Z'rat has mostly calmed down, but he's becoming bitter. Although he's requested the transfer, his Wingleader and Weyrleader agree it should go through, feeling that the change of Weyr will settle down the young bluerider.
