Once I wrote it, the thought hasn't gone away.
We DO need a consistent antagonist and pirates are perfectly natural, logical choice in this world setting, and in the geography of this location. They would also be a fairly localized problem. The North and Southern Weyrs wouldn't have much to do with it, but StarRise, Ista, and Southern - possibly Crescent since it, too, is right on the coast, could have a recurring problem.
It could also be fun because we could have the affected Lord Holders and the Weyrleaders/Weyrwomen of their territory be at odds on who's responsible for dealing with them: the Weyr, or the Holds? The two are autonomous, after all. The Weyrs 'protect Pern' as a whole, but the Holds are responsible for protecting the people and places within their borders.
Pirates, however, ignore borders.
So, after the first issue is out, I would like to develop this plot arch. I do not want a quick and easy resolution. I don't want the pirates to permanently go away. I want them to be a consistent, steady problem, which occasionally peaks and MUST be dealt with, then dies back to background until it peaks again.
I do not want to see the pirates romanticized, nor made stereotypically villianous.
Who would be interested in developing this plot arch/antagonist with me? There's going to have to be more than one ship of them, with their organization ranging from none (when they're a minimal problem) to tight (when they're peaking as a problem).
Any takers?

Something I will keep in mind... Kinda gives me a warm feeling "This will not have a quick and easy resolution," he grinned as his sour breath wafted up her nostrils, "I am not your Lord Holder" A drop of his sweat landed on her cheek and slowly trickled down to her neck.

Pirates/raiders do have a lot of potential. You have the raiders, those who are hit by them, those who profit from them, and those who would hire them to injure a rival. Enough of them together could sack a small seahold. Lots of stories here. One of the things Chantal had mentioned to me was the possibility of incarnating a trio of old Kindis Weyr personae and change them over into searaiders. My old character Dyrk would, I think, make a wonderful addition to the milieu. Besides, I love sea stories. I'll have to go see what I've got on the lad still.

Kindis Weyr? God, I haven't thought of them in AGES, although their reincarnated characters are still around! With you and your evil mind here, Dave, maybe I should just turn this project over to you? You do evil and devious much better than I do.

All I need now is Johnny Depp. Raiders of the Eastern Ring -- has an interesting sound to it, doesn't it?

Anna, can I get in on some pirate action here? I have a particular idea, I will try to flesh it out then kick it your way. I want a pirate with some connections to one of my characters as a little bit of a point to come up later and be interesting. :: cackle ::

Subcontract pirates? LOL! Why, sure! I think I have my weekend project now: putting together the pirate info. And Kelli, you are always welcome to jump right on in with any evil plotting and ponderings I do.

I'd definitely like in on this plot-line(theme) ;D I wouldn't mind writing some atypical pirate-ness.

I used some pirates and raiders at Haven on occassion but no one ever did a lot with them. Love the idea. Tina and I tossed around an idea for a story. I wrote some about it in an earlier topic but will put some here. If you have pirates you are going to also have merchant seaman to ship goods back and forth between the continents. Here is another prey for the pirates. Tina's idea was a young woman is found on shore bending over a man. She has a bloody knife in her hand. They are both wet so they have obviously washed up on shore. With all the problem with pirates, mistrust of the Weyr, the people of the hold naturally jump to conclusions and accuse her of murder. She has no memory of who she is, where she came from or who the man is. Any thoughts or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I've got a pirate character named Syris that's making his introduction at the time of the Gather. You may remember him as a boy from Turns ago (evil grin). Anyway, he's been active for Turns, now as a Captain for about a Turn, and some people call him the Pale Man (he has long, near-white hair). He leaves no survivors, and burns the ships he catches after removing cargo. He does sometimes take prisoners, as either slaves or to give to his nasty crew to keep them happy. He shows little genuine emotion, but is completely ruthless. Morander's been trying to track him down on his new sloop Rapier, the replacement for the Scimitar which went crashy-snap during the Wave. Folks can write me if they want to borrow him or such. I think it would be interresting if one of his surviving hostages is a character!
