Issue 1 had the Return to StarRise as it's theme, Issue 2 had the Horizon Hold Harvest Gather. These themes were things that all characters would be at least peripherally aware of, but that might not effect individual characters or stories; you could play with this idea, or not. We're currently looking for suggestions for a theme for Issue 3. Themes should be on a large enough scale that anyone who wants to can play with it, but also should be side-steppable for people who prefer. So--do you have a theme in mind? Is one of your characters going to be involved in something Weyr (or World) altering? Are you planning a story around a major event that might interest others as well? Do your plans for Issue 3 include the kind of fallout that others should have an opportunity to react to? Please send your suggestions to the Leadership at starrise.zine@gmail.com!!!! ;D

Geo was suggesting using the infirmaries as a theme for issue #28. Aerden has to admit that he finds that idea hard to argue with. (g)

That's a good one or how about the Pirate problem?

Heh...Maybe the ship's surgeon's area on a pirate ship?
Definitely not a fun place to be in the British Navy during the Napoleonic Wars.

Geo--Yeah. Mark and I took a tour of Nelson's ship when we visited England, once. The tour guide was pretty descriptive about the sickbay. Not your nice, clean, Federation starship kind of place.
Ahem. But anyway...Themes?

I think, for a theme to be effective, the membership needs to know enough about it in advance to participate...so we wouldn't want it to be the denouement of a big story! (Although, if you have such a major plot twist for this issue that will have enormous ramifications...You could talk to us about that denouement and it's fall out being the theme for Issue 4.)
So...if the theme were the Infirmaries, it would help to have some shaking up or changing or crisis in the Infirmaries for people to react to; otherwise the stories about the infirmaries may not have much in common. Is there a new character settling in? Are there conflicts between human and dragon healers about supplies? Any internal conflict that will cause behaviors others might notice?

Here are some other ideas: 1. Graduation of a weyrling class - the whole Weyr tends to celebrate those. 2. A major storm that the entire Weyr has to prepare for/do Search and Rescue for after. 3. Turnover Celebration 4. A Really Bad Threadfall. 5. A prank war. 6. Fall Cleaning at the Weyr. C'mon...let's here some more ideas.

And Storm!! I hear the winds a'blowin'!
K'tern also shakes his fist at the bad threadfall.

Lushin's apprentices, actually... If anyone journeyman or master dragonhealer could be said to have their own apprentices.

Refering to his team that he works with fore major injuries and such. I'd assume it'd be sort of a close family of a team after a while, with the journeyman/master as the head.

I'm bad...I like the idea of a prank war. (g)
Maybe a needlethorn-gathering party? Any major Hold weddings coming up?

I like all of Anna's ideas because they can work in any issue. A pirate theme, for example, would need to take place when the main plotters of pirates are ready for it--when, say, pirates were going to hold a Gather hostage...perhaps a Gather party that happened to include a field trip from the Goldriders Social Club. Just as a totally off the top of my head example. An Infirmary theme is a natural, but as I said--it needs a "why now?" hook. Other ideas--an issue that focuses on weyrlings, both the latest clutch and the first one or two from the fall. If we strove to make this the worst/craziest/funniest weyrling year ever, there would be immense potential for interaction everywhere--and with two established clutzes and one established prankster already, there's room to play. Or clutch wars--Invirith's clutch pitting themselves against the slightly younger Kasekith's clutch in a competition that devolves into (prank) warfare. OK, I got a little animated about that idea. Other ideas: 1) A problem "pet" that gets transferred from character to character while it's owner is away. 2) A costume party. 3) A bet that spirals out of control to involve more and more people. 4) An inter-Weyr competition. IMHO, the purposes of a theme are 1) To inspire stories 2) To encourage people to write TOGETHER, hopefully including complete strangers who have never done so before. So...more ideas?

The bet one would be hilarious. Something (off the top of my head) like a dare/bet to see who is able to get Lushin (Or otherRanker) on a date or somesuch.

I like the idea of the problem pet, actually. Brings to mind drooly watchwhers and foul mouthed parrots. Or whatever the Pernese equivalent is.
An inter-Weyr competition could be a lot of fun because people could use their characters from any place.
