A
history spanning over twenty years of writing.
A timeline reaching back to the beginnings of Pern fandom.
A focus on creative, strong writing, with room for writers of all skill
levels to learn.
A liberal group that embraces ideas and new concepts.
No gimmicks, no tricks. Just cool people, good writing, strong characters,
and solid plots of all kinds.
It's a place like no other, and there will never be another place like it.
This is the virtual component to StarRise Weyr,
a fan club based on Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern series. StarRise
Weyr is primarily an amateur writer's club. Members create Pernese "personas"
and write stories based on them for our quarterly fanzine, Out Of The Blue.
Writing stories is not mandatory, however. Many StarRise members enjoy simply
reading the fanzine or participating on our bulletin board.
Maria Fortuna, A Lovely Greyhound « Thread Started on Oct 23, 2009, 10:25pm »
My friend Karina had to put her dog, Maria (Mariah) to sleep this evening. Maria was only about 13 years old, but she had an autoimmune disease that basically made her skin fall apart and not heal. She also had cardiomegaly and was having difficulty breathing because of it.
Karina got her from the local greyhound rescue shelter down in Clear Lake. Maria was a dog who loved to be petted, which suited me just fine, because I'll pet a dog all day if allowed to. (g) Maria was bred to be a racer, but she was more of a social dog than a racing one; she preferred to hang out in the middle of the track with other dogs, while the racing dogs zipped on ahead. She doesn't seem to have been abused but was simply given to the shelter because she wouldn't race.
She would come around to be petted during gaming, and we'd spoil her and Karina's other greyhound, Tigger, rotten.
Maria was a truly sweet dog, with warm, expressive brown eyes. I'll miss her, but I'm glad she's out of the pain and discomfort she slipped into, toward the end. Karina sat with her and petted her for an hour before the vet gave Maria the injection.
