A
history spanning over twenty years of writing.
A timeline reaching back to the beginnings of Pern fandom.
A focus on creative, strong writing, with room for writers of all skill
levels to learn.
A liberal group that embraces ideas and new concepts.
No gimmicks, no tricks. Just cool people, good writing, strong characters,
and solid plots of all kinds.
It's a place like no other, and there will never be another place like it.
This is the virtual component to StarRise Weyr,
a fan club based on Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern series. StarRise
Weyr is primarily an amateur writer's club. Members create Pernese "personas"
and write stories based on them for our quarterly fanzine, Out Of The Blue.
Writing stories is not mandatory, however. Many StarRise members enjoy simply
reading the fanzine or participating on our bulletin board.

Welcome, come in and put your feet up, and try the klah--it's hot!
Do you two happen to know each other, or was your both joining today just a nice coincidence?
Ask any questions you have here, or elsewhere on the boards! Any of us will be happy to help. If you haven't downloaded the first two zines yet, that may be a great place to start. Writing is optional, but encouraged and supported. Don't admit that you do art (if you do) unless you want to be harrassed invited to illustrate for us.

While I don't recognize Starkiller, I certainly find the user name giangell familiar! Would you happen to be George Angell, owner of D'lantern and green Tabith? StarRise's very own poet extraordinaire?

Thanks, Hope. I was more a reader than a writer. I believe I was a associate member, I think, when Ootb was both print and TXT formats. It was a VERY long time ago. I found this forum just recently, and read both 26 and 27 of OotB. I had forgotten how good the stories were. Until now, I had to make due with the occasional FanFiction.net foray. If you are familiar with the quality of most 'writing' on that site, you'll know how painful that was.
I have put in a member request to the Yahoo group for more reading material, and since my hobby is 3d modeling/rendering, I may be able to provide some artwork once I figure out how to do the pernese dragons.

Nope. Eric den Biesen. It might have been one of those numbers. The one story that REALLY sticks out, even after all these years, is an impression story. I love impression stories, and in this one, the main character was female, and saying she was accident-prone would have been a gross understatement. Even after all that time, I still remember that one, and wish I still had it.
Well, I've collected and bought various 3d models over the years to help me with my imagery, and I'm learning 3d modeling, as what I'm looking for is not always available. Sometimes I can improvise though. I have about 5 or 6 awesome dragon models, yet, none of them look like the pernese dragons. I think one could be modified a bit, but the multifaceted eyes present a problem. I have to model a living creature sometime.
I did find out that one of the 3d stores I frequent DOES have a close approximation of a fire lizard. Heh. Guess who's off to buy it.

I wish I could remember more, but I don't think she was a gold candidate though, possibly a green. I checked my dragons, and I have two with the body shape to be pernese. Their head shapes are much less reptilian than the other four. The best of the two is the likely the one, as it's shape is closest. I'll get on to 'pernizing' him.
As to our clumsy candidate, I wish I could remember her name, or at least the number of the issue it was in. But, such is life when you get older. The old memory falls apart. BTW, were you ever able to get into any of Anne's son's books? I have all of her books, but I just couldn't get into his. Maybe his writing style is too different or something.
I wouldn't worry about not recognizing the name though. You know how many Erics are out there? One day, my boss called me, and four of us said, "Yes?".

Oh, my. Well, I have an uncle named Eric. And StarRise did have a member at one time named Eric Pree. But I think those are the only Eric's I remember.
I've read some of Todd's books. He's a good writer, but I do have to force myself to start reading his Pern books. I think he'd do much better - and I'd have a much easier time starting his books - if he focused on one of Anne's more science-based series. Nimisha's Ship, perhaps. I'd really like to see what he'd write that completely his own.

An ARTIST!!! Cool, cool, cool!!!! and brave enough to admit it, too!
Well, welcome, Eric, and we hope you enjoy yourself! We're happy to have you even if you don't choose to write, and even if you don't end up doing art. (Please ignore the sounds of Anna's protests at that last!)
No response from Giangell, so we don't know if Anna's guess was correct! (So, George, is it's you and you read this--let us know!)

Have any idea how big a hatchling is? I do remember in 'Dragonseye', Debera cracked her head on the underside of Morath's jaw because the hatchling was leaning over her cot when she woke up. This seems to indicate that they are not small when they hatch. I'm working on an impression scene, and would like to get the size right, though I hear there is mucho debate on dragon sizes.

Well, the size of a queen's egg is about hip-height on a guy. So, a current day hatchling would be pretty sizable - maybe about the size of an adult pony...?
Keep in mind, Dragon's Eye was during Second Pass. Dragons were a LOT smaller then!

True. Caranath and Faranth were a bit larger than a horse when they were full grown. By the second pass, the dragons were several hands higher than the first dragons.
BTW, I'm using DAZ's millenium dragon model for the Pern dragons. I've got the hatchling looking pretty much as I want it. Using Photobucket, can pics be posted here? I'd like some comment and suggestions as I mold this model as close to Pernese as I can.
Also, is there a StarRise Weyr layout anywhere. The Weyr layout and the surrounding environs? I'd like to model the area in Modo so I can do renders from the air. The dragons have to fly over something.
